Trailer Park–The Ethan Hawke Old and New Edition

Corridor from Gattaca

In honor of Ethan Hawke’s nomination for a best supporting actor Academy Award today for his film Boyhood, we have previews for two coming films from Hawke, a Shakespeare retelling called Anarchy, and a cyber-war thriller, Good Kill.  And why we’re at it we have three trailers for some of his best past films–in case you haven’t seen these yet: the stunning sci-fi masterpiece Gattaca, the true-life adventure story Alive, and the action-packed remake of John Carpenter’s Assault on Precinct 13.

Hawke is one of those under-rated actors who seems to put plenty of intensity and passion into his roles, whether for big movies like Dead Poet’s Society or Training Day (which earned him his first Academy Award nomination), for remakes of classic works like Hamlet and Great Expectations, or the lesser known films that follow.

Assault on Precinct 13 Ethan Hawke

First up, a trailer for the strangest choice of a Shakespeare play we’ve yet seen, Anarchy:

Can’t place the play?  It’s one of the Bard’s lesser known tragedies, Cymbeline.  But look at that cast:  Milla Jovovich, Ed Harris, John Leguizamo, Anton Yelchin, and Bill Pullman.

Anarchy is in theaters March 13, 2015.

Good Kill takes a look at modern soldiers plucked out of local malls for their gamer skills, pilots whose reflexes are used to direct drones as snipers from thousands of miles away.  Here’s the trailer for Good Kill:

Never a good sign, Good Kill does not yet have a U.S. release date.

We can’t vouch for either Anarchy or Good Kill, but you can take our word for these next great genre flicks starring Ethan Hawke.  We think his best film is Gattaca, a vision of a repressive future that takes genetics–or eugenics, to be precise–past the bounds of ethics and morality.  Here’s the trailer from 1997:

Gattaca co-stars Uma Thurman and Jude Law.  If you only see one Hawke film, this is it.

As much as we loved John Carpenter’s original Assault on Precinct 13, we were also impressed with the under-the-radar remake from 2005.  Here’s the trailer:

It’s a must-see for Carpenter fans, and anyone wanting to root for the underdog in a great action flick.

While you’re waiting for the 2015 adventure/action drama Everest, we suggest Alive, the survival story of a 1972 downed airplane carrying a soccer team into the frozen Andes.  Here’s the trailer from 1993:

The 2015 Oscar presentation ceremony airs February 22, 2015 on ABC.
