It’s a classic group of cereals that includes the only cereal that’s in the borg Hall of Fame: The good ol’ cyborg Frankenberry.  And they are all magically… er… frightfully delicious.  Or at least pretty much as you remember them from eating breakfast as a kid.  You probably remember that chocolate milk making Count Chocula and the blueberry Boo Berry, along with the strawberry flavored Frankenberry.  These classic marketing cartoon character mascots are recognizable to generations of kids whose moms let them eat ’em (thanks, Mom!).  Here are there original box covers:

But if you’re like me, your grocery store never carried Fruit Brute or Fruity Yummy Mummy.  Here is what they looked like back when they were originally released:

Every year, Count Chocula, Boo-Berry and Frankenberry are re-released for Halloween, but by popular demand General Mills (the “Big G”) is adding the other two cereals this year.  The boxes have been updated for distribution in most stores:

But as an exclusive to Target stores, General Mills is releasing all in their original style packages.  For filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino, who has already used Fruit Brute in both Pulp Fiction (with Eric Stoltz, above) and Reservoir Dogs (with Tim Roth, below), it’s an easy way to pick up some boxes to include in your production backgrounds.  Or just get ’em and eat ’em because they taste good.   I already picked up Count Chocula and am trying Fruit Brute for the first time.  (Good stuff!  It tastes a little like Frankenberry, a little like Cap’n Crunch Crunchberry).

Fruit Brute was on store shelves from 1974 to 1982.  Fruity Yummy Mummy was relatively a recent cereal, in stores from 1987 to 1993.  Count Chocula and Frankenberry were both born in 1971 and Boo Berry in 1973.  Although the cereals now have monster shapes, they originally all were circles with Xs in the middle.  And all had, and still have, those great little marshmallows.  Yummmmy.

Look for all five cereals in stores through October 2013.
