Retro fix–Indiana Jones’ map room playset–and more vintage toys return… with a twist

With what looks to be the final Indiana Jones movie–Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny–on its way, Disney has pulled out all the stops with its tie-ins.  We previewed some of those here at borg in February.  Today we’re diving into the Kenner retro action figure line.  The holy grail (Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade aside) for fans of Indiana Jones in the 1980s was the 12-inch Indiana Jones action figure, which was basically a re-dressed Han Solo from the Star Wars line.   Despite decades of action figures and statue collectibles that look more like Harrison Ford, no other action figure has the mystique of that first “large-sized” action figure.   There’s no word that Kenner is re-releasing that Indy figure (or the Star Wars vintage 12-inch line–wouldn’t that be great?), but as a spin-off to Gentle Giant’s enlarged vintage Kenner figures, a big Indiana Jones from Raiders of the Lost Ark is on its way from Diamond Select, available for pre-order now here at Entertainment Earth.  Even more interesting, an exclusive San Diego Comic-Con 2023 edition available for pre-order now here at Entertainment Earth will include a big bonus: a large-sized version of the original Map Room playset, a pretty cool surprise for fans of the franchise and vintage 1980s toys.

In case you missed it, this is the vintage Indiana Jones large-sized figure, and its twin from Star Wars:

Again, that’s not what is being released.  The new large-sized figure is a 12-inch version of the vintage figure with seven points of articulation, based on this figure, re-released earlier this year in its original size here at Entertainment Earth and here at Amazon:

Based on the above sculpt from Kenner, the Gentle Giant “Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark Indiana Jones 12-Inch Jumbo Action Figure” includes a pouch and pistol, a “fully accurate reproduction” with Map Room diorama, Staff of Ra, sextant, pouch, grappling hook and pickaxe, this approximately 1/6 scale reproduction includes a 12-inch figure of Indiana Jones in his classic gear, complete with pistol and whip. Limited to 1,000 pieces.  This set comes packaged in a full-color, vintage-style box.

For the San Diego Comic-Con exclusive version sold as a playset for about $40 more retail, look for the addition of the Staff of Ra and features from this original small-scale playset:

What will the box look like?  It hasn’t been released yet.  But Entertainment Earth is already taking orders, so order yours early in case the production run sells out.  The bigger question is why they chose to partner the Map Room playset with the Indy in his best-known outfit, instead of the figure that actually came with the original set.  This version:

This version was never offered on its own card, so it’s pretty rare.  Here are images of the new figure and its accessories:

But there’s more.

The vintage style 3 3/4-inch Indiana Jones is a replica of the rare early, short-lived line of action figures.  He looks just like you remember him.  Pre-order him now here.  In addition to re-releases of five of the original figures, including Indy, Marion Ravenwood, Belloq, Toht, the mechanic

… you can also pick up an Indy and Short Round from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and an Indy, Sallah, and Dr. Jones from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade:

These five figures can be ordered from Target here.

Toys, posters, and more from the franchise and new movie can be found here at Entertainment Earth.  The figures are available for pre-order here at Amazon, too.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny arrives in theaters June 30, 2023.
