The past six months saw Dynamite Entertainment bring back the 1980s Rankin/Bass animated series from Japan ThunderCats in their own new monthly series. This week the fifth issue arrives in comic shops everywhere, bringing to conclusion the first round of stories led by writer Declan Shalvy and artist Drew Moss. Readers can jump into a standalone story this week written and drawn by Stephen Mooney. It includes a preview of a spin-off series, ThunderCats: Cheetara, coming to comic shops in July. Then a compilation, graphic novel edition of the first five issues arrives later this year as ThunderCats: Omens.
When their planet Thundera is destroyed, the ThunderCats find themselves a home on a planet they call Third Earth. Tygra, Pantho, WileyKat, Cheetara, and Lion-O, the unlikely young leader–all anthropomorphic, bipedal, feline heroes. It’s a colorful series full of action, an expansion and update to the animated series that built a legion of fans.
Who’s bringing the Meow Mix and canned salmon? Take a peek below at the fifth issue arriving in comic shops today, along with variant covers and a look at the sixth issue coming your way in July.
Cover artists for the series include David Nakayama, Lucio Parrillo, Shalvey, Jae Lee, Ivan Tao, Rahzzah, and an action figure variant–all with fun imagery. Plus the quality of the card stock of covers for this series has been outstanding. Here’s your look inside this week’s Issue #5:
I love Stephen Mooney’s switch-up from the cartoon style of the first issues with his lookback to the superhero comics style of the 1980s. His work would be great for another tie-in series. But both styles will reel in readers.

It’s time we see come cosplay of these designs at Comic-Con, don’t you think?
