With San Diego Comic-Con weekend finally underway, that means new TV and movie trailers, and the biggest so far is for the new future noir live-action series Blade Runner 2099. For years we at borg have kept up on all things Blade Runner, from reviews of Philip K. Dick classics to Blade Runner 2033 the video game to Black Lotus the solid anime series, to the comic books that have filled in the blanks between the original 1982 movie and Blade Runner 2049. Setting a show 80 years into the future after the original is a big jump, so anything goes for the new series. The challenge will be delivering viewers something groundbreaking and exciting after we’ve seen the bar set both via great writing and great visual effects by the likes of Alien: Earth, Dune: Prophecy, and several Star Wars series.
The series was filmed in Prague, and comes from an executive producer slate including Ridley Scott, David W. Zucker, and Michael Green, with showrunner Silka Luisa. In a nice twist for the franchise, Hunger Games franchise actor Hunter Schafer plays a human who, at least in the beginning, is pretending to be a Replicant, with Michelle Yeoh as her partner, an actual Replicant. Legends stars Tom Burke and Johnny Harris, Shetland’s Amy Lennox, and The Pale Horse’s Sheila Atim are also in the cast. Getting the look of future noir just right will be another key challenge.
