Writer Andy Weir creates stories with outer space elements that are derivative yet somehow they get the attention of the masses, as with The Martian, made into a movie starring Matt Damon. When you watch the new trailer for Amazon MGM Studios’ new movie Project Hail Mary, see how many sequences look like scenes from The Martian. Will it be The Martian 2.0 and the latest mainstream “end of the world” drama in sci-fi dress? The uninspired title doesn’t help. What might help is the lead: Ryan Gosling, who arrives after success in some prominent comedic performances, Ken in Barbie and Lee Majors’ former leading role as the stunt man extraordinaire in The Fall Guy. So if anyone can make this story interesting it may be Ryan Gosling. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are directors on the film. Did they really need to explain the meaning of the title in the trailer?

It looks like Arrival, and for fans of that movie that may be a good thing. Look for Project Hail Mary in theaters March 20, 2026.
