Halloween Kills–A nostalgic, horror movie novelization not to be missed

I reviewed the movie on its opening weekend in October here at borg. The movie is a true triumph for fans of director John Carpenter. Of the ten (yep, ten) prior sequels to the 1978 original that set off an entire genre of movies, Halloween Kills is the most faithful to the original story. On the screen it was great fun seeing Jamie Lee Curtis reprise her starring role as 1970s survivor Laurie Strode, along with actors like Charles Cyphers back as the sheriff, Nancy Stevens as the doctor’s assistant, and Kyle Richards as the grown-up little girl. In Halloween Kills: The Official Movie Novelization, author Tim Waggoner digs into this great story, amplifying the characterization, and making everything that flashed quickly past the movie audience have deeper implications. He digs into the timeline of events in 1978 as the modern-day return is revealed moment by moment on that single day in 2018 that is spread over this final trilogy of movies. You’ll be hard pressed to read a better horror tale or movie novelization this year.

The Mitchells vs. The Machines–Good storytelling highlights Sony Pictures Animation’s latest visual spectacle

Surprisingly great, surprisingly real, and surprisingly… current? Sony Pictures Animation, the studio that brought you Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse brings its latest and greatest animated film to Netflix this weekend. It’s The Mitchells vs. The Machines–a sci-fi, apocalypse, coming of age, story about a weird family that ends up being the last family on the planet to be exterminated from the planet by the very technologies humans are so addicted to. Gravity Falls creators Michael Rianda and Jeff Rowe wrote and directed this story, a visually stunning spectacle reflecting life as we knew it in 2020… and may know it again, with contributions by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (both known for the LEGO movies and Into the Spider-verse). The themes are influenced by Tron and Tron: Legacy, National Lampoon’s Vacation, and the Terminator movies, leaning hard on the plot of Terminator: Genisys. It’s loud, colorful, crazy, and it gets family relationships just right, at least of the 21st century variety. It’s also the movie I was hoping for with The Incredibles 2.

Connected–The Incredibles meets Vacation this summer in sci-fi animated comedy

If you haven’t experienced it yet, you’re missing out. It’s the family cross-country roadtrip. And consider it a bonus if you take your dog. That plus the imposition of modern technology on family time, and the other downfalls of technology take center stage in the late summer release, Connected. The new animated film hails from Sony Pictures Animation, the same studio that created the powerhouse Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse and The Lego Movie.

But you don’t need to look too close to find the framework of The Incredibles–that quirky family doing the things that all families do–which invariably is fun to laugh at. Plus robots and, better yet, robots gone amuck. Sci-fi plus comedy plus family fun sounds like a win to us.

The cast of voice actors is not so much a major celebrity cast as found in many animated movies recently, but some will be familiar. They include Maya Rudolph (Saturday Night Live), actor and Halloween series screenplay writer Danny McBride (Despicable Me, Alien: Covenant), Abbi Jacobson (The Lego Ninjago Movie), Eric André (The Lion King, Two Broke Girls), the film’s director Michael Rianda (Gravity Falls), and Academy Award and BAFTA winner Olivia Colman.

Alien: Covenant–Meet the crew of the latest Weyland Corporation vessel

Directed by Ridley Scott and written by John Logan, Alien: Covenant is coming to theaters this summer. It is another of those rare and unusual films: The prequel that is also a sequel. It is the sequel to Prometheus (2012), so it is the second installment in the Alien franchise chronologically, prequel to the original Alien (1979), and the sixth movie produced in the series.

The film tracks a colony ship, the Covenant, which arrives at a habitable planet and finds Michael Fassbender’s cyborg David, who we last saw at the end of Prometheus. Fassbender plays dual roles, as the Weyland Corporation’s creation is also a member of the Covenant, as seen in the below preview.

Fassbender, Noomi Rapace, and Guy Pearce return from Prometheus in Alien: Covenant. New players include James Franco, Katherine Waterston (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), Billy Crudup (Watchmen), Danny McBride (Superbad, Fanboys), Demián Bichir (The Hateful Eight), Carmen Ejogo (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), Amy Seimetz (Stranger Things), Jussie Smollett (Revenge), Callie Hernandez (Machete Kills, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For), Nathaniel Dean (Farscape), and Alexander England (Gods of Egypt).
