Ewan MacGregor faces the Beanstalk in Jack the Giant Slayer

Beanstalk

By Elizabeth C. Bunce

Regular readers know that we’re big fairy tale fans here at borg.com.  And we’ve been outspoken about strong female characters in several recent screen adaptations.  But even we can admit that there are some fine tales out there featuring guys, and we were certainly not complaining last night when this trailer for Bryan Singer’s Jack the Giant Slayer premiered opening night at The Hobbit.

Here is the first trailer for Jack the Giant Slayer:

With an appealing allstar cast featuring everyone from Ewan MacGregor (Star Wars prequels, Brassed Off) and Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: First Class) to Bill Nighy (Pirates of the Caribbean, State of Play), Stanley Tucci (The Hunger Games, Road to Perdition), and Warwick Davis (Willow, the Harry Potter franchise), Giant Slayer looks to have great worldbuilding reminiscent of Brothers Grimm, and a Princess Bride-style sense of humor.  Singer has also made sure to include the requisite plucky princess (although evidently she still needs to be rescued–which is not a feature of the original tales), Eleanor Tomlinson (Alice in Wonderland, The Village).  Add to that mix a host of appropriately menacing giants and a beautifully realized beanstalk, this looks like a winner.
