If Neil Gaiman’s prose adaptations of historical works haven’t held your interest, perhaps this new visual adaptation of his novelistic collection of stories in Norse Mythology may be a better entry point. Adapted by writer-artist P. Craig Russell (whose adaptation of Richard Wagner’s The Ring of the Nibelung should be required reading for all graphic novel enthusiasts), this new series is sure to get those with Viking heritage their needed fix for all things Nordic. Thanks to key visual contributions from Russell and artists Mike Mignola, Jill Thompson, David Mack, and Jerry Ordway, and color work by Dave Stewart and Lovern Kindzierski, get ready to get immersed in some ethereal, surreal, classical surroundings with the stories of Thor, Loki, Odin, and more.
Previewed below, the first of 18 forthcoming monthly issues includes the first three stories, “Yggdrasil and the Nine Worlds,” “Mimir’s Head and Odin’s Eye,” “Treasure of the Gods,” each created by a different team of artist and colorist (nice for anyone who may not be a fan of any contributor’s work, because you need only wait a few pages for something new and different).
Those familiar with Russell’s artwork will at first think this is entirely a book of his work, and that’s probably because he was responsible for all the layouts, the editing, and the text selection from the source work (which was intentionally cut back from Gaiman’s original prose work). Quickly you will recognize thoe pages handled with the signature lines of Mignola and Ordway, with Jill Thompson chapters coming later in the series. David Mack will be contributing variant covers for the series with his very Mike Grell-esque painted style.
