The Lego Batman Movie director Chris McKay is back, this time with a monster mash and one of Universal Studios’ Universal Monsters’ weirder outings. It’s the Dracula comedy Renfield, and it has four cast members that should prompt you to want to check it out. First, it features the singular Nicolas Cage as Dracula. How could you miss that? Second, it co-stars Nicholas Hoult in what looks like another interesting role. Third, the always funny Awkwafina plays a cop. And fourth, it co-stars Brandon Scott Jones, one of network TV’s funniest comedic actors. Renfield is the servant of Dracula in Bram Stoker’s original 1897 Gothic horror novel Dracula.
Take a look at the first trailer for the surprising and unusual Renfield:
Has Nicolas Cage ever made a bad movie? Maybe so, but he certainly gives everything to every role, and his choice are unusual. Our favorite may be his voice work as Spider-Man Noir in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse, but also looks at classics like Raising Arizona, Honeymoon in Vegas, National Treasure, and The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, cool sci-fi like Knowing and Next, underrated superhero films like Kick-Ass and Ghost Rider. Nicholas Hoult’s big roles include the younger Beast in the X-Men movies, Mad Max: Fury Road, and recent hits The Menu and The Current War. Awkwafina has mastered the comedic actor career with her own TV series, Nora from Queens, and major hits Raya and the Last Dragon, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Jumanji: The Next Level, and Ocean’s 8. Brandon Scott Jones plays the former Revolutionary War patriot in the brilliantly funny series Ghosts and he’s appeared in dozens of other TV series.
Look for Renfield in theaters April 14, 2023.
