You’d think the movie studios would release these trailers during Planet Comicon, C2E2, or WonderCon. Tomorrow a trailer from Sony for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse is due, and late yesterday Disney pushed out a new trailer for its Secret Invasion series. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been struggling to get its footing since the first decade wrapped in the two-part Infinity War/Endgame finale. But this new series has some components going for it that could make it a stand-out among the movies and series in the MCU’s grand Phase V. In fact, other than a second season of Tom Hiddleston as Loki and Charlie Cox breathing some life into what was a bland and boring Netflix series with a new Daredevil movie restart, we someday may be looking back at Secret Invasion as the best of all forthcoming Phase V entries.
First, what started the momentum for Marvel was Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury and his team of Clark Gregg’s Agent Coulson and Cobie Smulders’ Agent Hill. It’s probably why to this day the most re-watchable, standalone movie of the MCU is Captain Marvel, which also has the best almost-villain with Ben Mendelsohn’s shape-shifting villain-turned hero Talos. Add to that the actress of all the franchises, Emilia Clarke, and this six-episode series will need to work hard to fail. It’s just too bad they aren’t editing it into a movie, because you know six hours is going to have plenty of padding.
Check out the new trailer for Secret Invasion:
It’s not a great trailer, but it has the three top characters that make this a direct sequel to Captain Marvel (although the odd casting of Olivia Coleman as an agent makes it look like a Doctor Who spin-off). The absence of the Avengers is becoming a pretty big elephant in the room and a component that makes all these entries seem like they are lacking something.
In case you missed it, we previewed the first trailer for Secret Invasion here at borg six months ago.
Marvel’s Secret Invasion series begins June 21, 2023, streaming weekly for six weeks only on Disney+.
