It’s not that Adam Driver is nearly unrecognizable playing the 19th century-born father of automotive style and speed, Italian race car driver and businessman Enzo Ferrari. It’s not that director Michael Mann (The Last of the Mohicans, The Insider) may have the year’s historical drama winner on his hands. It’s Erik Messerschmidt’s incredible cinematography, which makes this first trailer for the Christmas theatrical release Ferrari look like a spiritual relative to Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather film series. The trailer looks like it’s all contemporary footage in an Italy travelogue. Messerschmidt’s camera work was the stand-out feature of the movie Mank, which won him the Oscar, and he’s delivered other stylish, distinctive movies before, including Ant-Man, Tomorrowland, and Gone Girl, along with episodes of TV series Mad Men, Legion, and Bones.
In Ford v Ferrari, we saw a story that takes place only nine years later, with Ferrari played by older actor Remo Girone. How will another Ferrari film fare? It co-stars Oscar-winning actress Penélope Cruz as wife Laura. Check out this trailer for Ferrari:
Look for Ferrari in theaters beginning Christmas Day 2023.
