Donald Glover is bringing Mr. & Mrs. Smith series to Prime Video

The trope of spy lovers has been around forever.  Scott Bakula starred with Maria Bello in a Mr. & Mrs. Smith TV series in 1996.  Alfred Hitchcock’s Notorious took on the trope in the 1940s, long before a 2005 movie called Mr. & Mrs. Smith would star real-life couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.   Community series star and Lando Calrissian actor #2, Donald Glover is remaking the 2005 movie into a TV series coming in February, although the show admits it is only loosely inspired by those characters.  Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith looks like it’s going to lean into the snark, as two spies with little chemistry are put together to play husband and wife on their next mission.  The series co-stars Maya Erskine, who played Sully Stark, an early rebel in the Star Wars series Obi-Wan Kenobi (her role in Mr. & Mrs. Smith was originally announced as going to Phoebe Waller-Bridge, which would have made an interesting Solo: A Star Wars Story reunion).  The show has a host of stunt cast roles, filled by the likes of Parker Posey, John Turturro, Alexander Skarsgärd, Eiza González, Ron Perlman, Paul Dano, and Sarah Paulson.

As actors and creators go, Glover is at the top of the pack, so this series should be fun.  Glover is executive producer, and he created the project with Francesca Sloane, a writer on Glover’s Atlanta series.

It’s another “Will they or won’t they?”

Won’t they?

The music and style hints at something like The Man from U.N.C.L.E. movie.  Look for all eight first season episodes of Mr. & Mrs. Smith on Prime Video beginning February 2, 2024.
