If you’re a fan of Kevin Costner and the Western genre in general, you may have one thought when you hear the Academy Award-winning director and actor is bringing a four-part series of Western movies to the big screen: If you’re spending this much money, couldn’t you just give viewers a Silverado sequel? Even Jeff Fahey is in this movie (Where’s the dog, Paden?), along with the late Brian Dennehy’s daughter Elizabeth, and although Fahey’s character died in Silverado, he could come back to play someone else, along with Kevin Kline, Scott Glenn, Rosanna Arquette, Danny Glover, and the great Linda Hunt. But no, Return to Silverado doesn’t look like it’s in the cards.
We previewed Horizon: An American Saga this past December in our sneak peek at 2024 releases here at borg. The first trailer for Costner’s next Western is here, for the first of four parts. The hokey title doesn’t do much, and the first look at the film doesn’t evoke the cinematography or style of a great John Ford classic Western, nor does it seem to have a new angle on the genre like we saw in the Coen Brothers’ fantastic anthology The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (reviewed here). Bogged down with a heavy musical theme and lots of melodrama, the high points come in quick flashes via supporting characters played by two of our favorite genre actors: Luke Wilson and Michael Rooker. They join an announced Jena Malone, Giovanni Ribisi, Isabelle Fuhrman, Kathleen Quinlan, Chris Conner, and Will Patton with Sam Worthington, Sienna Miller, and mostly a young cast of actors.
Check out the first trailer for this first of four movies in Horizon: An American Saga:
Costner nearly always delivers for his fans–he’s delivered great Westerns before and he’ll probably do it again. Chapter 1 arrives in theaters June 28, 2024, with Chapter 2 coming August 15, 2024. No date has been released yet for Chapters 3 and 4, which are only in the development phase.
