First look–Jonny Quest returns this summer

Quick–what do Space Ghost and Jonny Quest have in common?  Quite a lot, actually.  Both are beloved Hanna-Barbera animated series.  Both featured the voice of a young actor named Tim Matheson (as Jace and Jonny), who would grow up to star in Animal House and Fletch, and have key roles in shows like Magnum Force and 1941, and guest star in several TV series from Leave it to Beaver to Burn Notice in addition to directing even more shows (we reviewed a biography recounting his experiences here at borg).  And both Space Ghost and Jonny Quest are now Dynamite comic book series all these years later.

We mentioned in our review of Space Ghost yesterday that Issue #2 included a preview of the new Jonny Quest series, and have images and cover art for the first issue for borg readers below.  Get ready to climb aboard the Sea Quest for your next adventure, joining the original crew of Jonny, his adopted brother Hadji, their dog Bandit, their father Dr. Benton Quest, and his bodyguard Race Bannon.

It all begins where the animated series left off in 1964, but things quickly take a turn as the team returns from an experiment at sea to their home base in Palm Key, only to discover that the once familiar landscape is now very different.

Sounds like time travel, right?  The feel from the four covers for Issue #1 and four preview pages conjures Land of the Lost, Journey to the Center of the Earth, and maybe even Mr. Peabody, Sherman, and their Wayback/WABAC Machine.

The series is written by Joe Casey with artwork by Sebastián Piriz.  Cover artists include Chad Hardin, Jae Lee, Tom Raney, Bob Layton, and Richard Pace

Here is a look inside the first issue–artwork only:

And here are the first four cover options released, plus some variations that will be available:

Jonny’s hair, Hadji’s gaze, Bannon’s G.I Joe Adventure Team style, Dr. Quest’s beard, and bulldog Bandit’s eyes–it’s all there.

This is going to be fun.  Add Jonny Quest to your pull list at Elite Comics or your local comic shop now.  It’s scheduled to ship from Dynamite in August 2024.
