Wolf Man–Blumhouse leads the next Universal Monster movie

It’s worth noting that the new Universal Studios movie Wolf Man was made by Blumhouse and the director of The Invisible Man.  A full “Dark Universe” reboot of the Universal Monsters brand was to begin with The Mummy, but the studio realized that’s not what its audience was looking for.  The Invisible Man was the first of these one-shot stories to arrive after The Mummy.  When you look back you’ll find one-shots–not crossovers–were really the heart of many of the Universal classic movies anyway.

In its first trailer, Wolf Man arrives as a surprise–it has the vibe of Blumhouse’s big hit The Black Phone.  This kind of story worked with that movie, so why not overlay it on a classic monster story monster fans are familiar with?  Check it out for yourself.  Here’s the first teaser-trailer for Wolf Man:

Christopher Abbott (It Comes at Night) stars as Blake, a man who inherits his remote childhood home in rural Oregon. Blake persuades Charlotte, played by Julia Garner (Apartment 7A, Fantastic Four: First Steps) to take a break from the city and visit the property with their young daughter, Ginger, played by Matilda Firth (Coma).  But as the family approaches the farmhouse in the dead of night, they’re attacked by an unseen animal.  Then Blake begins to behave strangely…

There’s a wait for this one.  Originally arriving next month, Wolf Man is now slated for release January 17, 2025.
