Dark Winds–Zahn McClarnon returns for third season of Hillerman mystery series

The first season of the adaptation of Tony Hillerman’s Dark Winds introduced us to the young badass cop Sgt. Bernadette Manuelito.  Played by Jessica Matten, she was created by Hillerman’s daughter Anne as an update to the stories after she took over the novels from her father.  Bernadette is a high point for the show and her relationship with Jim Chee became a key focus until she walked away at the end of Season 2.  Set in New Mexico and featuring former Longmire co-star Zahn McClarnon as Lt. Joe Leaphorn and Kiowa Gordon as Jim Chee, the series adapted the first two of Hillerman’s Leaphorn & Chee mystery novels.  It’s produced by Robert Redford, who had previously made films of four Hillerman novels.  Season 2 didn’t quite capture the spark of the first, but the trailer for Season 3 looks like things may be picking up again.  McClarnon, Gordon, and Matten return with Jeri Ryan and series newcomers Bruce Greenwood and Jenna Elfman.  This season will expand the prior seasons’ six episodes to eight.

The new season also features Raoul Max Trujillo, Tonantzin Carmelo, Terry Serpico, Christopher Heyerdahl, Phil Burke, Alex Meraz, and Derek Hinkey.

Season 3 of Dark Winds comes to AMC and AMC+ March 9, 2025.
