Review by C.J. Bunce
It’s the swift pace of The Exorcism of Buckingham Palace that will leave readers eager to read the next issue. Writer Hannah Rose May (The Exorcism at 1600 Penn, Rogues’ Gallery) gets right to it, sinking the reader into the chaos of the British monarchy as the heirs to the throne are suddenly lost at sea. Why were they all on the same ship? Who let it happen? May depicts a fictional royal family, but who hasn’t thought of someone like a young Prince Harry taking the throne? Here the heir to an ailing King turns out to be playboy and recovering addict Theo Belmont, whose biggest challenge seems to be deciding how he will manage to elope with his girlfriend. But everyone else in England is at wit’s end, with the Prime Minister, Buckingham Palace, citizens, and news shows all ready to get their mitts into the new royal personality. Theo agrees to the plan, but he fears that he–and his entire family–have been long haunted by a dark curse.

Artist on the series is Kelsey Ramsay (Moon Dogs, Godzilla: Heist), whose style borrows elements from Bill Sienkiewicz and the artist known as Jock. The series is a compelling addition to the disaster thriller genre. It’s part of IDW Publishing’s ID Dark imprint, and this horror story gets off to a strong beginning.
