In the foreword to the new Doctor Who how-to hardcover book Crochet AmiguWHOmi: Adventures in Time and Space, crochet designer Liz Ward wisely connects the dots between the common community vibes of both Doctor Who fans and crochet crafters. If you know any, you probably know someone who is a fan of both. The BBC and Ten Speed Press have teamed up to create the next officially licensed tie-in filled with crochet patterns, following up on Dungeons & Dragons Crochet: A Book of Many Patterns, reviewed here. Amigurumi is, of course, the Japanese craft of crocheting or knitting small, adorable stuffed yarn dolls or toys. Crochet AmiguWHOmi includes patterns for 50 creations, including a Fourth Doctor doll, the Doctor’s full-sized scarf, a TARDIS, a Dalek, a Fez hat, a host of Doctors and Companions, an Ood, Weeping Angels, and much more. The book is heading to bookshops next week, but you can pre-order a copy now here at Amazon.

Don’t blink!
What’s great about this book of crochet patterns is that it also provides instructions on how to get started with crocheting–so you don’t need to come to the book with any prior crafting knowledge or experience. With a little practice you’ll be able to make 50 great projects.

The patterns are divided into four categories: amigurimi (stuffed plush characters including Doctors, Companions, and aliens), wearable items (like Tom Baker’s scarf), household items, which include a cool K9 Doorstop and a Meep backpack, as well as Who-themed coasters, and a collection of mini-amigurumi: six Doctors, five Companions, Jelly Babies, and aliens: the Slitheen, Ood, Sontaran, Zygon, and a Cyberman.

All the designs look great, and the book is targeted to all skill levels. High points include the TARDIS, the Dalek, the Fourth Doctor, and the Weeping Angel–these are cute stuffed dolls that have signature features that make it obvious what and who they are for anyone seeing one on your desk. The carefully constructed British flag on Rose Tyler’s shirt is particularly slick. You could see someone setting up a table filled with these creations to sell at either a craft sale or a comic convention.

Check out the wee Who scarf! Liz Ward did an excellent job differentiating the doll characters with hairstyles that will quickly have you know you’re looking at Doctor Donna, Amy Pond, or Matt Smith’s Doctor.
It will make a great gift for your favorite Whovian and Maker. It’s time to start a new hobby and get creative! Crochet AmiguWHOmi: Adventures in Time and Space is available for pre-order now here at Amazon from Ten Speed Press, with a street date of June 9, 2026.
