Did you know there were Advent calendars for Halloween?  Neither did we.  Not really anything remotely religious related, you now have “Halloween Countdown” books to stretch out Trick or Treat, Beggar’s Night, Mischief Night, All Hollow’s Eve–whatever your word for it it’s the night to get your costume game on.  And there’s not just one, but four.  Gifts for 13 days leading to Halloween… one features Harry Potter’s wizarding world… one features The Nightmare Before Christmas… one features Hocus Pocus… and one features the Villains of Disney.

The 2019 movie Ready or Not starred Samara Weaving as a new bride in an atmospheric, Gothic story that doubled as a dark comedy and horror-lite cautionary tale, a fun (recommended) flick about a wedding, about marriage, and marrying into a new family–the dark side of families, the skeletons in the closet.  The strange horror sub-genre continues this weekend in Sony Pictures’ theatrical release of The Invitation, original titled The Bride.  This time the bride doesn’t know she’s the bride, and it’s not a comedy, but it looks to be on the bloodier side, and trailers show it has some promise, with Fast & Furious, Army of Thieves, Die Hart, and The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance star Nathalie Emmanuel as the bride-to-be.

Is it a 23andMe scam to lure a woman out of the city to become a main course for vampires, or is she going to have this guy for lunch?  Sony isn’t hiding this as a vampire show, inspired by an early entry in the genre, Bram Stoker’s Dracula.  Take a look at these trailers for The Invitation

It’s probably the single most aired holiday movie every year, showing on networks like ABC Family, Freeform, and Disney daily or more every October.  Thirty Halloweens since they first saw the family friendly Hocus Pocus, fans of the perennial witch tale get their chance to find out what the three Salem sisters have been up to.  And they don’t need to pay theater ticket prices.  Disney+ will be streaming the movie, Hocus Pocus 2, with Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy all back again.  The movie will also feature Star Trek Discovery and The Shape of Water actor Doug Jones.
