Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities–Netflix anthology series begins next week

Fantasy-horror director Guillermo del Toro, known for writing the screenplays for movie series including the The Hobbit, Hellboy, and Mimic and writing and directing major hit films The Shape of Water, Crimson Peak, and Pan’s Labyrinth, is stepping into Rod Serling, Alfred Hitchcock, and Ray Bradbury’s shoes in his next project.  Del Toro has put together an anthology horror series, coming to Netflix beginning next week and debuting new episodes daily leading to Halloween.  The downside is none of the one-hour short films are directed by del Toro, and only one episode is based on one of his stories.

The previews (check them out below) look more like the episodes favor traditional slasher horror than del Toro’s own fantasy-tinged brand of movie-making.  The eight stories feature actors from past and present TV and film, including Beetlejuice and Fletch’s Geena Davis, Harry Potter’s Rupert Grint, The Rings of Power’s Ismael Cruz Cordova, Star Trek Beyond and Atomic Blonde’s Sofia Boutella, The Chronicles of Narnia and The Punisher’s Ben Barnes, The Man in the High Castle and Supernatural’s D.J. Qualls, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs and The Incredible Hulk’s Tim Blake Nelson, Amadeus and Star Trek Insurrection’s F. Murray Abraham, and Alice and Wonderland and Back to the Future’s Crispin Glover.

Look for the first two episodes of Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities streaming on Netflix October 25, 2022.
