When the Rat Pack (you know, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Peter Lawford, and Joey Bishop) first made the heist comedy Ocean’s 11 about a group of WWII pals in Las Vegas, do you think they had any idea they were establishing a brand that would be continuing with a new film 58 years later?  In the latest entry, Ocean’s 8, Warner Bros. has Frank’s daughter Nancy serenade us in the first trailer, which features a nicely cast crowd of actors.  In case you haven’t been keeping count, this will be the fifth film featuring an Ocean family member leading a group on a major con.  Sinatra was the original Danny Ocean, and in the reboot Ocean’s Eleven, Ocean’s Twelve, and Ocean’s Thirteen, George Clooney took over the role and led a cast including Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, and Julia Roberts.

Next year we’ll see Sandra Bullock lead the way as Debbie Ocean, fresh out of jail and enlisting a group of varying skill sets to steel valuable jewels at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art.  Her co-stars include Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Richard Armitage, Olivia Munn, Rihanna, Katie Holmes, Mindy Kaling, and Dakota Fanning.

Secret Life of Pets

Yes, it’s that time again.  Time for another edition of Trailer Park.  This time we’re looking at four coming attractions of the animated variety.  Two hail from Illumination Entertainment and two from Disney companies.

The Secret Life of Pets gives a look into the world of animals at home when humans are not around.  Zootopia looks at a parallel universe of animals living their lives like humans.  The Good Dinosaur is another parallel universe story, following the lives of dinosaurs if that giant asteroid bypassed Earth 65 million years ago.  And Minions follows the little yellow fellows from Despicable Me as they look for the ultimate villain to support.

And then we have our recommendation of viewing while you’re waiting for the talking animal shows to hit your local theater.  Let’s get on with it!

First up, The Secret Life of Pets from Illumination Entertainment.  Here’s the trailer:

Voice actors include comedians Kevin Hart, Louis C.K., Bobby Moynihan, and the great Albert Brooks.  The Secret Life of Pets arrives in theaters July 8, 2016.

Next, Zootopia from Disney/Pixar:

Movie concession food alone in theater

There might be a reason the movie concession food in the above photo is alone in the theater and the popcorn doesn’t look happy.

We have six trailers for this weekend’s edition of Trailer Park, all with something in common:  They all will be competing for your entertainment dollars as they all will be opening the weekend of June 28, 2013.  Another thing they have in common?  They might prompt you to find something else to do on the weekend of June 28, 2013, other than go to a movie.  But at least there’s a new Jason Statham movie.

Decide for yourself:

Byzantium is a mother vs. young daughter story about living with a mother who is a vampire, a “woe is me” daughter, and a very uninteresting-appearing melodramatic story in a 19th century setting.  The only thing this has going for it is Bond girl Gemma Arterton stars as the vampire mom.  But if you want to enjoy watching a bad movie starring Gemma Arterton you’d probably be better off renting Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters.

Here is the trailer for Byzantium:

Gravity movie poster 2013

Gulp.  Houston, we have a problem.

The last preview for a movie that made me feel like the new teaser for the sci-fi film Gravity was the gut-wrenching preview for Open Water.

Although it seems like the studio doesn’t care that we see what must be the key scene in the film, this one looks to set up a pretty scary situation of man vs. nature.  It asks the obvious question: How the heck are they going to get themselves out of this disaster?

Check out this new teaser trailer for Gravity:
