First look–1996 Twister gets an update with summer movie Twisters

The first Twister came out in 1996.  It was a big deal back in Central Iowa where it was filming, on the heels of Field of Dreams and The Bridges of Madison County, including local appearances by stars Bill Paxton, Helen Hunt, Cary Elwes, Jami Gertz, Alan Ruck, and Philip Seymour Hoffman.  It was nominated for two Oscars, for sound and effects, directed by Speed director Jan de Bont, written by couple Michael Crichton and Anne-Marie Martin, and especially because of memorable appearances by the late Paxton and Hoffman, it was a hit and it’s still a great action re-watch.  I saw it opening weekend as a break studying for the bar exam and can attest it was not a good way to relax.

Now with tornado season upon us and threatening the country even more than recent years this soon in the year, twisters are definitely a source of fear, so it’s a smart move for universal to release a trailer now for Twisters, a remake and “update” to the original, that is also not a sequel, with no returning characters.

Twisters stars Top Gun: Maverick’s Glen Powell, War of the Worlds’ Daisy Edgar-Jones, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’ Anthony Ramos, Katy O’Brian (The Mandalorian, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania), Kiernan Shipka (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), Maura Tierney (Liar Liar), and Sasha Lane (Hellboy).  It’s directed by two-time Academy Award nominee Lee Isaac Chung.

Twisters hits theaters July 19, 2024.
