Men in Black is now firmly footed in the annals of modern classic sci-fi. With Men in Black III, starring Will Smith as Agent J, Tommy Lee Jones as Agent K, and Josh Brolin as a young Agent K., MIB delivered one of the best third entries in any movie franchise. We have not yet discussed the movie reboot of the TV series 21 Jump Street or its hilarious sequel 22 Jump Street–a very different series than the Men in Black. We loved the buddy cop comedy team. Multiple Academy Award nominee Jonah Hill (Moneyball, Superbad), and action star Channing Tatum (G.I. Joe, The Hateful 8) provide the ultimate comic relief as two cops that go undercover in high school and Spring break. Hill is one of the best actors of his generation and Tatum’s suave charm can do no wrong.
In the end credits for 22 Jump Street, mock-ups of any and every sequel were shown as sort of a forward-looking flashback of all the sequels that could one day be made. So why not a mash-up where the Jump Street duo go undercover with the alien defenders?
Reportedly Sony is in discussions with The Muppets and Alice Through the looking Glass director James Bobin to helm such a film. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, directors of the first two Jump Street flicks, are unavailable since they will be working on a little film about a young Han Solo in the Star Wars franchise. Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones will likely not appear again, as a reboot with a younger cast is supposedly the path be taken. If so, we think Anthony Mackey’s work as both the Falcon in the Avengers series and his great performance in The Adjustment Bureau would make him a good addition to the Men in Black universe as an updated Agent K or just a new Agent from the agency.
And, of course, there is no need to re-cast a young Tommy Lee Jones again. Josh Brolin was perfect, and even if he only had a cameo or small role as a director of MIB, he must be part of the new story to bridge the series together.
Reportedly filming for the as-yet unnamed crossover will happen this year.
