Fiction and reality finally came full circle this week. As another release for the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, The Wand Company has created what many Star Trek fans have always hoped for: Captain Kirk’s communicator as a working flip phone. It’s where reality got the idea for the flip phone in the first place, right?
ThinkGeek is selling the new Bluetooth communicator, the first fully-functional wireless Star Trek Communicator. It connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth to make and receive telephone calls, listen to music, or consult Siri or Google Now. It includes 20 authentic sound effects and Enterprise crew voice clips and was designed using 3D scans of an original series prop.
And, of course, it features the trademark flip-to-answer functionality.

It looks like you need a little finesse to pull off the flip in styling William Shatner fashion:
Will we see a communicator offered by a wireless company as a standalone phone down the road without being tethered to a smart phone? For now, this version will have to do.
The new gadget retails for about $150. Check it out here at ThinkGeek.
