You know her as the red-haired she-devil with the sword. And they are the green-skinned invaders from the Topps trading cards. And Mars. Those vile little nasties of Mars Attacks are returning to Earth, but this time they have no chance against one of the fiercest heroines in the planet’s history, Red Sonja. Or do they? Sci-fi meets fantasy as Robert E. Howard’s savage barbarian queen pulls out all the stops to protect her world against the superior technology of science fiction’s most loathsome helmeted ghouls in Mars Attacks Red Sonja, coming this month from Dynamite. Get ready to pull out your wallet for a stack of variant covers.
Eisner Award-winning writer John Layman revisits the worlds of Red Sonja and Mars Attacks in this crossover mini-series, with artwork by Fran Strukan, colors by Valentia Briski, and letters by Taylor Esposito. Strukan offers a stylish modern update while not losing the retro nature of the original Mars Attacks trading card comic art. Readers will find more fun than fear here, with some violence and gore appropriate for the mash-up. Esposito’s lettering stands out here over lettering of most comics–his varied designs really elevate the story and series.
Look for several variant covers for the series, including art by Lucio Parrillo, Dustin Nguyen, Arthur Suydam, Luca Strati, Barry Kitson, and Alan Quah. Keep an eye out for some great homages to sci-fi and fantasy’s past. The Martian-possessed Robby the Robot cover is truly inspired.
