Billed as “based on a true story,” The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is the next movie directed by Guy Ritchie, the director who dazzles more often than not with movies like The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and Sherlock Holmes, although he hasn’t had a big success since U.N.C.L.E., which starred Henry Cavill, who also leads this next action movie. But that “based on a true story” is only a bit more true than was Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds–and this movie looks like it’s from the same WWII fairytale universe.

The story is based on Churchill’s Secret Warriors: The Explosive True Story of the Special Forces Desperadoes of WWII, by Damien Lewis–not to be confused with the actor of the same name. The writer is known for many over-hyped “explosive true story” books about combat. So consider the source, and consider this as much fiction as truth.

As a Guy Ritchie popcorn movie action flick? The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare looks like fun. Check out the first trailer:
Initially to co-star Jake Gyllenhaal, the movie features The Princess Bride’s Cary Elwes looking much like his character in Psych, plus Snake Eyes’ Henry Golding, Bloodshot, Baby Driver, and Ambulance star Eiza González, Strange New Worlds’ Babs Olusanmokun, The New Mutants’ Henry Zaga, and Fast X’s Alan Ritchson.

Look for The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare in theaters April 19, 2024.
