Castle Swimmer–Iphigenia myth collides with Shakepeare’s Henry V in undersea fantasy

Review by C.J. Bunce

Writer-artist Wendy Martin wastes no time with readers in her new book Castle Swimmer, the first volume collecting Episodes 1-19 of the first season of the Webtoon comic into graphic novel/storybook form, available here at Amazon.  We meet Merman Kappa just as he tumbles into existence as the latest Chosen One or Golden Child–this prophetic character a wonder of the undersea realm.  But at the same time he is prophesied to bring great things to the Mer-people as “The Beacon,” another prophecy is going to change everything for him.

Like many destined for tasks and duties they didn’t sign up for, The Beacon, whose real name we learn to be Kappa, doesn’t want to be the Chosen One.  But how can he reconcile that attitude in a realm where every sea race has its own dueling visions?

It all gets worse when he learns that the Sharks, another race of Mermen, have their own Chosen One, and his destiny comes at a high price.  You see, Prince Siren of the Sharks is told from his peoples’ scrolls that he must kill the Beacon to eliminate an old curse that has prevented prosperity for his people.

Kappa is quickly caught and held in a jail by the Sharks, as Prince Siren’s mother tries to guide her son to “do the right thing.”  Luckily for Kappa, Prince Siren’s version of the right thing doesn’t include killing.

What should you do, and what would you do, when those you trust tell you you must do something that you believe is against everything you stand for?

Martin combines the Ancient Greek myth of sacrifice found in Iphigenia at Aulis with Shakepeare’s Henry V, as Prince Siren meets with anyone who will listen to ponder over his decision, and Kappa and he both struggle with difficult sacrifices asked of them.  This is only the beginning of their tale, with future volumes expected ahead to continue the story.

This attractive hardcover storybook features 266 pages of colorful fantasy storytelling.  Its audience could be young readers and adults alike.  Martin includes commentary at the end about her creative journey, along with a bonus mini-chapter.  It’s a powerful story you won’t want to miss.  Just released from Ten Speed Graphic, order Castle Swimmer, the first volume, now available here at Amazon.
