Red Sonja — Underwhelming trailer for the heroine’s return to the big screen

In the months leading up the 50th anniversary of Red Sonja, fans were expecting an A-level movie starring Hannah John-Kamen.  Unfortunately she dropped out of the project and what is left behind looks like just another fantasy movie.  Red Sonja, a new movie coming next month, brings back the “She-Devil with a Sword” created by Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith for Marvel Comics in 1973.  It stars relative unknown Matilda Lutz as the title character.  She doesn’t quite match the fierce, female Amazon equivalent of Robert E. Howard’s Conan in either her early incarnations or more recent Dynamite Entertainment comics and cover art, and the trailer looks like the cheaply made fantasy movies from the early 1980s.  Lutz’s Sonja looks afraid in these first images.  The movie comes from Samuel Goldwyn, which was once known for higher end movies.

Check it out for yourself.  Here is the trailer for Red Sonja:

It’s not much of a wait to see this one.  Red Sonja is in theaters August 15, 2025.
