About all you can say about the idea that Guillermo del Toro is adapting Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein into a new movie is… What took so long? Is there any subject more suited to the imagination of del Toro than a dark, Gothic, red-spattered iteration of Frankenstein’s monster chasing his creator across the frozen tundra? Oscar Isaac will star as the Doctor, with a relative unknown, Jacob Elordi, as his creation, plus Mia Goth as Elizabeth and a who’s who of character actor talent: Christoph Walz, Charles Dance, David Bradley, Burn Gorman, Lars Mikkelsen, and Ralph Ineson.

It has all the extras, too, tapping some of del Toro’s Crimson Peak behind the scenes movie magicians, with a musical score by Alexandre Desplat, cinematography by Dan Laustsen, costumes by Kate Hawley, and production design by Tamara Deverell.
