One of the funnier bits from this summer’s first swing at DC Comics at the movies, James Gunn’s Superman, was the ending, which featured a brief appearance by Milly Alcock as the new Kara Zor-El aka Supergirl. This past week DC released the next preview of this summer’s superhero movie Supergirl, and Krypto–who we learned in the Gunn-verse is actually Supergirl’s dog–is shot. Yep, Gunn is turning to a John Wick story device for his next project. It’s not the first time he’s leaned on animal harm to tell a story, just look back to all the animal violence in Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3. It makes you wonder why anyone handed him the keys to one of Warner Bros.’ biggest, oldest, bankable assets–to comic book movies–that maybe a few families will want to take their little kids to see.

Milly Alcock looks great as an outcast heroine, almost a mirror image of the persona of Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but she also acts like Chris Pratt’s angry hero of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. Is this going to be another James Gunn movie? Check out the latest trailer for Supergirl:
C’mon, does anyone really want to see a story centered on Krypto getting shot? Is that all anyone could think of?
The movie is directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira. Other actors in the cast include Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, and Jason Momoa as DC Comic’s alien mercenary Lobo.
Look for Supergirl in theaters June 26, 2026.
