During one of the hottest weeks of the year, there’s something refreshing about the sight of snow, although with two new movie trailers that’s also accompanied by some nail-biting thrills and excitement.  It’s back to Everest times two, first with a movie about the first successful Mount Everest ascent and return by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953 with a focus on Norgay.  Tenzing stars Chinese actor Genden Phuntsok as Norgay, and Tom Hiddleston as Hillary, co-starring Willem Dafoe, Caitriona Balfe, and Tenzin Jigmey.

The next trailer is the IMAX documentary looking back at the 2018 North Face climb up Everest and first-ever “ski descent” by climbers Jim Morrison and Hilaree Nelson.  Everest: The Other Side was directed by producers and former husband and wife documentary filmmakers Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin.

If you’re interested in Everest you won’t want to miss the brilliant storytelling of Jon Krakauer’s book Into Thin Air, documenting the disastrous May 1996 Mt. Everest climb season.  So compelling, his account will leave you breathless.  Russian climber guide Anatoli Boukreev didn’t like Krakauer’s account, so he responded with his own, The Climb: Tragic Ambitions on Everest.  Left for Dead: My Journey Home from Everest documents another climber named Beck Weathers’ story.  Each of these are worthy reads.  Other accounts include Climbing High: A Woman’s Account of Surviving the Everest Tragedy, by climber Lene Gammelgaard, After The Wind: 1996 Everest Tragedy–One Survivor’s Story, by Lou Kasischke, High Exposure: An Enduring Passion for Everest and Unforgiving Places, by David Breashears, and the Everest IMAX movie (filmmakers encountered the disaster climbers on their own climb and Brashears was instrumental in saving Beck Weathers).  Krakauer’s story was adapted into the movie Into Thin Air starring Christopher McDonald.  Director Baltasar Kormákur’s 2015 theatrical release Everest, another account of the same event, featured an all-star cast.

Look for Tenzing in theaters for a limited release beginning October 9, 2026, followed by a home release, streaming on Apple TV+ beginning October 16, 2026.  Everest: The Other Side is in theaters October 30, 2026.
