Review by C.J. Bunce
You have just one more day until the record-breaking prequel to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin comes to local comic book shops with the first issue of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin—Lost Years. Kevin Eastman’s new five-issue series with IDW Publishing takes a look back at Michelangelo leading up to the events of the award-winning series, while introducing a new bale of turtles (yep, that’s the word) being trained as the next generation of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles heroes.
The darkness of the earlier series is offset with some cute new characters. Check out a look inside the first issue, preview the key art for approximately 50 variant covers heading your way tomorrow, and learn more about a one-shot tie-in issue called the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin—Lost Day Special.
It’s no surprise to see writers Kevin Eastman and Tom Waltz, with artists including SL Gallant and Ben Bishop, look back to Mikey’s journey without his brothers or beloved father figure Splinter. But the big surprise is April O’Neil finds herself and four young mutant turtles she and her daughter, Casey Marie Jones, are raising and training caught up in a new battle. It’s a bittersweet mix of action and drama following Mikey trying to pull himself up by his bootstraps, and some sweet scenes as readers are introduced to a new merry league of warriors in their very first issue. Get ready for some fun ahead.
Writers Kevin Eastman and Tom Waltz, illustrator Ben Bishop, and colorist Luis Antonio Delgado are also putting together a 40-page special issue, available in May 2023, called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin—Lost Day Special, which ties together the past and the future of the Last Ronin series, setting the stage for the future of the characters. And it finds the new turtles lost in the big city.
