Although Zachary Levi’s spin on the original Captain Marvel opened the gates for a renaissance for DC at the movies with his new Shazam in 2019, DC Entertainment has made clear it will be taking an entirely new path, with new exec James Gunn taking the movies in a new direction that is neither Snyderverse based, nor likely Shazam based. That’s unfortunate for fans who thought DC finally had a chance post-Snyderverse. But before we see Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy plots recycled with DC characters, we’ll get one more chance at what a fun DC could look like without all the dark edginess as Shazam! Fury of the Gods makes its way to the big screen next month.
The latest trailer shows more of why DC’s future could have been very different. Check it out below!
The classic comics original Marvel family is back, led by Zachary Levi, with Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu in the villain roles for Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and Djimon Hounsou’s wizard receiving a costume upgrade:
Unfortunately Black Adam didn’t fare well at the box office, so the contemplated sequels to cross over with Shazam seem doomed as well. The biggest loss there is Aldis Hodge’s great performance as the Justice League’s Hawkman–we’ll probably not see him don those wings again.
Zachary Levi doesn’t let his fans down, so get ready. Shazam! Fury of the Gods is coming March 17, 2023.
