The best thing about this next trailer is how long you watch it before you say aloud, “This looks like someone is trying to make a Wes Anderson movie.” Then the card flashes: it is a Wes Anderson movie. No doubt the movies of writer-director Wes Anderson are an acquired taste. Fortunately he exhibits some variety, as we’ve explored before here at borg. Whether it’s Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, The Darjeeling Limited, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Moonrise Kingdom, The Grand Budapest Hotel, or Isle of Dogs, at least one of these films will likely appeal to you. For his next big screen venture, Anderson is delivering the retro vibe, a lot of that 1950s Tomorrowland speculation about the future. The sci-fi titled Asteroid City has another trailer that is instantly recognizable from Anderson’s framed cinematography, disturbing color hues, and fourth-wall breaking stares from his cast.
And the cast is as big as you’d expect, with new-to Anderson big names Tom Hanks, Margot Robbie, Steve Carell, and Maya Hawke, plus returning familiars Scarlett Johansson, Jeffrey Wright, Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum, Edward Norton, Tony Revolori, Jake Ryan, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Bob Balaban, Adrien Brody, Liev Schreiber, and Jason Schwartzman, and many more, including Matt Dillon, Hope Davis, Hong Chau, Fisher Stevens, and Rupert Friend. Anderson has replaced Woody Allen as the director to flock to for actors’ resumes. Fans of Anderson movies will be happy to hear the music is again by Alexandre Desplat.
Check out this trailer for the expectedly unusual Asteroid City:
According to the marketing, “Asteroid City takes place in a fictional American desert town circa 1955. The itinerary of a Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention (organized to bring together students and parents from across the country for fellowship and scholarly competition) is spectacularly disrupted by world-changing events.”
Asteroid City arrives in select theaters June 16, 2023, followed by a general release June 23, 2023.
