Sherlock & Daughter–Next Victorian spin-off mystery begins today on the CW

Nothing has been adapted more, supplemented, expanded, and turned into more tie-in and spin-off books, movies, and television shows than Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes.  Readers and audiences have been introduced to countless never-before-seen relatives, friends, partners, and every other comrade in the past century plus, and even Holmes has taken on different personas, filling in as the impetus behind thousands of other sleuths.  And don’t even start counting all the settings, with Holmes appearing as a character in his own right in adaptations across the globe, as well as finding himself in different time periods (see Time After Time, as only one example).

With much of Holmes canon now in the public domain, you’ll find there are no signs of adaptations slowing down.  And why not?  The latest comes from Edgar Award nominee James Duff, the creator of The Closer (another twist on a modern Holmes, including another blend of quirks for the star) and writer for Star Trek Discovery and Star Trek Picard.  The series is Sherlock & Daughter, created by Northern Irish writer Brendan Foley, starring Harry Potter franchise, RED 2, and The Big Lebowski’s David Thewlis as Holmes and The New Mutants’ co-star Blu Hunt as Amelia Rojas, a young Native-American woman whose mother was recently murdered. As they join up to solve the latest Holmes case Amelia sets out to prove that the great detective is her long-lost father.  Dougray Scott co-stars as Professor Moriarty.  Other actors appearing include The Closer and Major Crimes’ Phillip P. Keene, Gotham and Casino Royale’s Ivana Miličević, and Mr. Selfridge’s Aidan McArdle.
