They Will Kill You — The Menu meets The Skeleton Key in next heroine horror flick

They Will Kill You is the latest entry in that small sub-genre of Gothic horror movies featuring a heroine targeted specifically to undertake some action to survive. That could describe any number of slasher horror movies, but here we’re talking about “bride horror” like Ready or Not and The Invitation–but without the bride, like The Menu. The genre probably dates back to H.G. Wells’ The Island of Dr. Moreau and Richard Connell’s The Most Dangerous Game. The difference is this isn’t that creepier staple of 1970s and 1980s slasher flicks where a screaming young co-ed with no skills is targeted, attacked and hunted down (Roger Ebert called them “vile bags of garbage”). Unlike Ready or Not this isn’t about a quirky family, unlike The Invitation this isn’t about vampires. They Will Kill You is more like the cult in The Menu, mixed with the woman answering an ad for a job as in Skeleton Key.

Deadpool 2 and Bullet Train’s Zazie Beetz plays Asia Reaves, a woman answering an ad for a housekeeping job at a luxurious New York apartment complex. Once she gets there, she discovers residents have been vanishing for decades, and it just may because of a creepy cult. The show co-stars Medium’s Patricia Arquette, Harry Potter’s Tom Felton, Austin Powers’ Heather Graham, and Black Mirror’s Myha’la.

Is it just slasher horror or something else? It has the vibe of something from Blumhouse, which has defined the sub-genre thus far. Check out this gory trailer for They Will Kill You:
