Next Red Sonja series begins–50th anniversary forges ahead with several variant covers

Review by C.J. Bunce

After a year that saw Samurai Red Sonja, Immortal Red Sonja, Sonjaversal, The Invincible Red SonjaRed Sonja: Black and White, another Red Sonja, and the announcement of Hannah John-Kamen (Star Wars, The Dark Crystal, Marvel, Game of Thrones, Tomb Raider) cast as the next live-action movie Sonja (phew!), the 50th anniversary celebration continues with this month’s release of an all-new Red Sonja, Issue #1.  Get ready for a Red Sonja series with a very 1970s feel.  Forget about Sonja’s stilted formal dialect, and think more Xena with red hair.

The first issue is a lot of fun.  Writer Torunn Grønbekk and artist Walter Geovani take readers back to the nostalgia and fun of past Sonja fantasy-realm series.  Variant cover artists tapped for the series include Frank Cho, Joshua Middleton, Shannon Maer, Mike Mignola, Jim Cheung, Alan Quah, Jenny Frison, Kevin Eastman, Bryan Hitch, Lucio Parrillo, Stephen Platt, InHyuk Lee, Joseph Michael Linsner, Bjorn Barends, and more.

Take a look inside the art for the first issue, plus several variant cover options for the series’ first issues:

On the run and framed for murder, Sonja has no one she can turn to and no one she can trust…
