It’s been forty years since we first met one of Eddie Murphy’s most popular creations: Axel Foley, in 1984’s Beverly Hills Cop, 34 years since we last saw him in the less successful sequel, Beverly Hills Cop 2, and 30 years since even fewer moviegoers saw him in the second sequel, Beverly Hills Cop 3. As much as it seems like Eddie Murphy has been away, he never really left, including movie appearances in hit series Shrek and The Nutty Professor, with major critical acclaim in Dolemite is My Name and a Christmas movie this past season, Candy Cane Lane, worth watching only because it’s fun to watch Murphy’s reactions on the screen. Like the big span between Coming to America and Coming 2 America, is there any doubt Murphy will make a hit out of a fourth adventure for the Beverly Hills Cop–Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F–especially with the success of throwbacks and 1980s nostalgia?

Here is the final trailer for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F:
It’s nice to see so many returning actors, including Paul Reiser, Bronson Pinchot, John Aston, and Judge Reinhold. Who knows who else may show up–in addition to newcomers Kevin Bacon and Joseph Gordon-Levitt? If you recall the original, you know key to the movie’s success was that Harold Faltermeyer soundtrack. Lorne Balfe is stepping in to provide the tunes to this sequel, but the trailer is making good use of the original.
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F arrives on Netflix July 3, 2024.
