First look–Uma Thurman joins Charlize Theron in The Old Guard 2

On the heels of heavy-hitting, big-budget, high-energy, and fun Netflix direct-to-TV action movies 6 Underground and Extraction, it was a shame Netflix’s follow-up The Old Guard was more fizzle than fireworks, even starring Academy Award-winning actor Charlize Theron as the badass leader of the next take on Assassin’s CreedThe Old Guard 2 is coming this summer, also with a script by Greg Rucka based on his comic book mini-series (with artist Leandro Fernández), this time directed by Victoria Mahoney, who worked on the Star Wars sequel franchise.  The movie’s trailer alone looks better than the original movie, which suffered from poor dialogue, a weak script, slow pacing, and a lack of excitement.  This entry looks even more like a video game movie, just without the video game.

The big win is the return of Uma Thurman to the action movie sphere.  Returning old guard actors include KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenarts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Veronica Ngo, with Henry Golding joining the team.

Here’s hoping this one is better than the first.  Check out the trailer for The Old Guard 2:

In the first film Theron played lead character Andy, the oldest of four surviving members of a group of badass immortals (Schoenaerts, Kenzari, and Marinelli) whose purpose seemed to be to attempt to do good–what they viewed as good–by eliminating bad elements, people, etc., throughout history.  As a new member was called in to join the team (played by KiKi Layne), a long-time hound on the trail of the team’s secrets (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor) worked to bring down the group for a mad scientist puppetmaster.  With one or two more twists thrown in, that was the entire first chapter for this film series.

The Old Guard is available now, streaming exclusively on Netflix.  Look for The Old Guard 2 streaming beginning July 2, 2025.
