It all begins with the introduction of a new Universes Beyond initiative that starts this November with the launch of Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft, coming November 17, 2026, as part of the Season of Champions. With a 256-page Gameplay Expansion book (created in tandem with Blizzard Entertainment, Inc.), Warcraft returns to the tabletop for the first time in two decades with characters, dungeons, and legendary foes from more than 20 years of the World of Warcraft franchise.  Look for eleven new species, nine sub-classes, with six all-new (DemonHunters, DeathKnight, and Shadow Priests!).  It will also include iconic dungeons adapted from the game for Dungeons & Dragons.

As a tie-in, look for the Icecrown Citadel Map Pack, which includes full-size poster maps and tokens usable with an included digital adventure that brings characters from level 16 to level 20.

Then “players looking for a more mature and brutal D&D setting” can check out Dark Sun, the cult-classic, post-apocalyptic setting, D&D’s first mature-rated setting, requiring a shrink-wrap release.  Anchoring the Season of Survival, the Dark Sun books and accessories invite players to face off against tyrannical sorcerer-kings and survive the blood-soaked wastes of Athas with almost 500 pages of content, including expansions Dark Sun: Blood and Power (a player’s expansion guide) and Dark Sun: Edge of Oblivion (a DM setting expansion), an alternate limited edition 5.5E Player’s Handbook, and a DM screen and map set.

At the Gen Con presentation, writer/producer/actor Joe Manganiello announced his new role as Chief Creative Officer of D&D Icons, a new program that brings together legendary past D&D writers and designers, including Margaret Weis, Tracy Hickman, and Luke Gygax.  It begins as original Dragonlance creators Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman introduce a new Dragonlance TTRPG book, compiling 40 years of knowledge and lore into what is promised to be the most ambitious Dragonlance volume ever.  And Luke Gygax announced he will be spearheading a completion of father Gary’s never-before-seen Greyhawk adventure as Greyhawk Legacy.

Greyhawk continued as a theme at Gen Con with the reveal of Greyhawk: Crown of the Witch Queen.  Players return to the setting where it all began to decide Greyhawk’s fate amid the return and ascent of Drelnza, the vampire daughter of Iggwilv the Witch Queen—perhaps better known as Tasha—as she seeks to claim her birthright.  It will feature a 160-page hardcover, with a Map Pack and DM Screen coming in the back half of 2027.

In further Tasha news, she’ll be featured in the video game Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons with voice work and performance capture from actor Maggie Robertson, opposite Battlestar Galactica’s Tricia Helfer, who leads the game as Kaatri.

Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons is a third-person, single-player action-adventure game set in a dark fantasy open world inspired by Dungeons & Dragons.  It’s coming in November 2026, early access November 3, and wide release November 17.

To wrap up the year’s D&D Icons series, R.A. Salvatore will bring one of the biggest fantasy characters ever to life as Drizzt Do’Urden returns in The Legend of Drizzt gameplay.

From Dark Sun, which offers levels 1-20 for the new Psion class, here is a first look at some of the city-states.  According to Greg Bilsland, executive producer for D&D, each represents a different flavor of apocalyptic storytelling:

TYR (pronounced “teer”), a flicker of freedom in this dying world, its sorcerer king lies dead, but a revolution continues.  Tyr’s flames forge a future in iron and burns those suspected of sympathizing with tyrants.

Then there’s DRAJ, which forsakes the ways of the rest of the realm, following a lunar god-king.

URIK is a brutalist-inspired environment.

In RAAM (pronounced “rom”) every day is a world of debauchery.

As part of D&D Beyond’s efforts to bring on more players, Wizards of the Coast is launching a new “Looking For Group” or LFG feature.  Players now have three ways to find a D&D group: find local in-person events through an event finder, form tables with the online community via the D&D Discord server, or find professional Dungeon Masters through a new partnership between D&D Beyond and StartPlaying.  More information is available on the D&D Beyond website.  In addition to helping players find a group, the D&D Beyond team also unveiled a mobile app built on top of a new game platform that will be geared toward in-person play.  This mobile experience is expected early 2027.

The Dungeons & Dragons leadership announced a new partnership program, working with studios across the tabletop game industry to bring official, annual TTRPG support.  The initial partnerships include Ghostfire Gaming with a new Ravenloft release (2027), Visionary Productions with Eberron (2028), and Kobold Press with the Forgotten Realms (2028).  In the years ahead, the D&D team expects the program to expand to include additional settings.

Also announced at Gen Con, Theo Solomon joins the D&D actual play YouTube show Dungeon Masters cast for Campaign 3, set in Azeroth as seen in the new Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft, as well as Campaign 4, a frigid Icewind Dale adventure featuring the actors playing their Baldur’s Gate 3 characters set to close out the show’s first season.
