First look — Star Wars officially comes to Dungeons & Dragons

Wizards of the Coast unveiled the first images of its combination of Star Wars and Dungeons & Dragons, previewed here at borg this summer at this weekend’s annual New York Comic-Con.  Fans of Star Wars who have long been waiting for a roleplaying game that isn’t tied to a video game (like the new Zero Company, discussed here) at last get to sink their teeth into a fully-developed, fully-realized RPG that includes Star Wars heroes like Princess Leia and Han Solo.  Gamers for decades have created homebrew adventures, but next year we’ll get to see what D&D’s creators can deliver.  The first peek isn’t the new core rulebook but a volume of adventures called Star Wars: Tyro Squadron.  What the heck is Tyro Squadron?  We don’t know yet, but two clear themes can be found in the images.  First, this first adventure volume serves the era of The Empire Strikes Back based on imagery with Snowtroopers outfitted from that era, as opposed to the updated era seen in The Mandalorian and Grogu.  Second, the artwork looks very much like the Dark Horse Comics era of Star Wars adventures, considered by many as a high point of the expanded Star Wars stories.

At the same time the description from NYCC sounds like the anthology of standalone stories found in 108 issues of the vintage Star Wars comics created by Marvel Comics’ creators: “take the fight to the Empire as part of a secret Rebel crew.  Set during the Original Trilogy, these new stories unfold as Luke and Leia fight their own battles across the galaxy.  Fly daring missions, explore new corners of the galaxy, and help shape the Rebellion’s story—your way. ”  That’s a pretty good vibe to look forward to.

Wizards of the Coast hinted at Star Wars Celebration 2027 as the next milestone in seeing what’s next with this Star Wars and Dungeons & Dragons team-up.  Keep coming back to borg as more D&D news is available.
