Is that the Death Star trash compactor Dianoga creature from Star Wars as the co-star of this movie?
Ever since I read Bradley W. Shenck’s Retropolis back in 2017 and the inverted version, Paul Guinan’s Boilerplate, I was wondering how long it would be before someone would start to build some retro-futurism into the movies. You see it in Tomorrowland a bit as well as actual early Disney. Now if you were to mix Retropolis with Adam Christopher’s robot noir Killing is My Business you might arrive at The Incredibles creator Brad Bird’s next movie, Ray Gunn. The Rocketeer, The Fifth Element, Star Trek Voyager’s The Voyages of Captain Proton, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Philip K. Dick… the vibe isn’t quite the same as any of these in this first trailer, but Bird seems to be trying to pull a lot together.

What makes this trailer not capture that sparkle from The Incredibles is the absence of obvious fun. Maybe it’s the casting of voice actors that don’t jump right out at you? Sam Rockwell as headliner? Does the animation just look too clean for noir in any century? See what you think. Here’s the first trailer for Ray Gunn:
The movie co-stars Alan Tudyk, Tom Waits, Scarlett Johansson, Bobby Cannavale, Michelle Rodriguez, and John Ratzenberger.
Look for Ray Gunn in theaters December 4, 2026, streaming on Netflix December 18, 2026.
