Star Wars Outlaws –Another movie trailer that… isn’t

Star Wars Eclipse (previewed here in 2021) still isn’t playing on your game console, but it had a trailer preview that left everyone ready for it.  It’s been a dozen years since the premiere of another brilliant looking game that wasn’t, Star Wars 1313, previewed here at borg.  We never learned why the realistic virtual reality-filled game wasn’t released, but while we were waiting we’ve seen Star Wars: The Old Republic, Star Wars Battlefront, Star Wars: Squadrons, the frequently advertised Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and its predecessor Fallen Order, and even more re-releases of past games.  Along with footage of actual game play, Lucasfilm Games has released its next “cinematic trailer” for the latest in Star Wars gaming: Star Wars Outlaws, the first ever open world Star Wars game.

The visuals look good and the music, which moves on from typical Star Wars themes, is even better.  Set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, don’t look for any familiar characters, except Han Solo in carbonite, a rancor, and lots of alien races from the movies and series The best part?  Everything looks like Star Wars.

In Star Wars Outlaws you play Kay Vess, a scoundrel seeking freedom and the means to start a new life with a sidekick named Nix, in a story that looks very similar to Han and Qi’ra trying to bust out of their lots in life in Solo: A Star Wars Story.  As the Empire keeps its sights on the Rebels, the outlaw factions we saw in the Tatooine cantina and throughout The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Solo: A Star Wars Story, and years of the original Marvel Star Wars comics are still doing their business behind the scenes.

Here is some marketing material for the game:

Explore distinct planets with bustling cities and cantinas before racing across sprawling outdoor landscapes on your speeder. Each planet brings new adventures, unique challenges, and enticing rewards if you’re willing to take the risk.

Live the high-stakes lifestyle of an outlaw. With Nix by your side, turn any situation to your advantage: fight with your blaster, overcome with stealth and gadgets, or find the right moments to distract foes and gain the upper hand.

Take on high-risk, high-reward missions from the galaxy’s crime syndicates. Steal valuable goods, infiltrate secret locations, and outwit enemies as one of the galaxy’s most wanted. Every choice you make influences your ever-changing reputation.
