The Mandalorian and Grogu — New trailer pulls in some surprises

Try this on for size: Star Wars hasn’t featured time travel among its many sci-fi and fantasy tropes. But wouldn’t it be fun if some kind of Force event eventually sends Grogu (formerly known to all as Baby Yoda) back in time, back well before the Clone Wars, where he (secretly clad in Mandalorian armor and with the skills he learns from the Mandalorian ways) trains the Jedi and eventually Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker–the man who began to train him? Why not?

It’s been only a little more than a week since the Super Bowl teaser, and we now have a full trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu. It’s packed full of characters from across the Star Wars franchise, so many that we’re going to be dissecting this movie for a long time once summer arrives. As far as we’re concerned Disney and Lucasfilm can continue to deliver new trailers weekly until the premiere in May so long as they don’t give away the entire movie. Directed by Jon Favreau and written by Favreau and new Lucasfilm head honcho Dave Filoni, you can rely on this dynamic duo to re-ignite the franchise–and you can see plenty signs of it in only a few minutes of previews.

This trailer features the second live-action appearance of the over-sized animated series Star Wars: Rebels character Zeb Orrelios, and Jabba the Hutt’s son Rotta and the bow-wielding bounty hunter Embo both from the animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars–okay, they’re still animated but not in the same way. There’s everyone’s favorite little droid R2-D2 back again. And although that sounds exactly like Jon Favreau reprising his Ardennian character from Solo: A Star Wars Story, it’s actually the voice of director Martin Scorsese. Plus a new look at Sigourney Weaver as Colonel Ward.

After four seasons of what could be called The Mandalorian Tales (three seasons of The Mandalorian and the single season of The Book of Boba Fett), and nearly six years since the last Star Wars movie, Star Wars will be back in theaters in May.

Viewers are reminded The Mandalorian tales aren’t just space fantasy, they’re full-blown space Westerns–and get ready for a film full of callbacks. Front and center is a new kind of AT-AT tearing across a mountain pass, all for anyone wanting a revisit to the ice planet Hoth from The Empire Strikes Back. The Razor Crest is back! Surely that’s due to some work by everyone’s favorite mechanic–Amy Sedaris’s Peli Motto and her Anzellan garage pals. And the big bonus of this trailer for fans of Star Wars Rebels is voice actor Steve Blum’s very Jason Statham-inspired, oversized lug Zeb Orrelios.
