Marvel unveils a bigger trailer for Avengers: Doomsday

The annual San Diego Comic-Con week has begun with a big Marvel trailer.  But you gotta wish Disney and the Marvel and every movie distributor would stop showing so much in movie trailers.  Would it be more fun not to know Chris Evans (last seen not as Captain America but as Johnny Storm in Deadpool vs. Wolverine) and Chris Hemsworth were returning to the Marvel movies as Steve Rogers and Thor (see the first teases here and here if you missed ’em)?  The studio already unveiled a long list of actors to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, taking over theaters with a date pushed back now to December 18, 2026.  The biggest surprise may be Kevin Feige & Co. weaving in the Time Variance Authority from the Loki series as a major plot thread.

So far it all looks like Avengers: Endgame Again We Really Mean it This Time.  Are audiences going to return to the theater for a Marvel movie if they won’t go back for a Star Wars movie?  Will we know more after we see the box office returns for Spider-Man: Brand New Day?  Either way, you have plenty of your favorite superheroes to spot in this new trailer for Avengers: Doomsday:

Everything so far is shown filmed in darkness and shadow.  The cast includes Robert Downey, Jr. back not as Tony Stark, but villain Victor von Doom, plus Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier aka Professor X (last seen in a surprising return in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness), Ian McKellen as Erik aka Magneto, Kelsey Grammer as Hank McCoy aka Beast, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique (who lost her powers when we last saw her), James Marsden as Cyclops, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Channing Tatum as Gambit, Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Anthony Mackie as Captain America, Simu Liu as Shang Chi, Letitia Wright as Shuri, Winston Duke as M’Baku, Danny Ramirez as The Falcon, Tenoch Huerta Mejía as Prince Namor, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova aka the new Black Widow, Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, and Lewis Pullman as Sentry.  Who did we miss?  Beast, Nightcrawler, and Sentry didn’t make the trailer.  And no announcements have been made for the return of Marvel’s biggest names: Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, or Tom Holland as Spider-Man.  Maybe they will have the surprise cameos.  But that also leaves room in the next crossover movie for Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, Oscar Isaac as Moon Knight, Tatiana Maslany as She-Hulk, Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel, and Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau.  Maybe everything hinges on Alaqua Cox’s Echo or Dominique Thorne’s Ironheart or the Guardians of the Galaxy, Wanda and Vision, the Eternals, or The Defenders.

How many times can you successfully replay a timeline?  The Terminator movies seem to indicate that number is somthing less than six.

It’s going to be quite a wait.  As with the last Avengers movie, this movie, too, will be followed by a team-up/crossover sequel a year later.  That will be Avengers: Secret WarsSo the 39th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Avengers: Doomsday, arrives December 18, 2026, and the conclusion arrives in the 40th film in the MCU, Avengers: Secret Wars, December 17, 2027.

Where is Agent Coulson when we need him?
